Learning to Trust

When storms of adversity crash against us, trusting God’s faithful presence and promises can feel difficult. Yet Scripture offers encouragement through those who leaned into radical trust during great trials.

Consider Abraham, who chose to trust God’s provision even when asked to sacrifice his long-awaited son Isaac. Or Ruth, who trusted the Lord to sustain her as an impoverished widow in a foreign land. Think of David, who trusted God to deliver him while on the run from Saul’s murderous rage.

Elijah trusted in God’s power when confronting hundreds of false prophets at Mount Carmel. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego trusted God to rescue them from Nebuchadnezzar’s fiery furnace.

The Gospels are full of examples of incredible trust amid adversity. A desperate woman trusted Jesus could heal her chronic bleeding with but a touch of his cloak. Four friends trusted Jesus to heal their paralyzed companion, even tearing up a roof to lower him at Jesus’ feet! A grief-stricken sister named Mary trusted Jesus could resurrect her brother Lazarus after he had been dead and buried for days.

What storms rage around you today? Recall those who chose to trust God with their tomorrows. Determine to walk forward in bold faith, grasping Jesus' promise: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The safest place to weather life’s fiercest storms is found in the fortress of God’s faithful presence. Fix your eyes on Jesus and trust him fully with the days ahead.
